[RE] DeSigns (advertise yourself)

I love signs. There is nothing like vintage Route 66 advertising. Neon. Freeform shapes. Color, or not. Most of these representations are in response to a friend, acquaintance, a fond memory of childhood or a great place I visited. Enjoy the ride.

Welcome

Kevin’s

1. Kevin is one of the best shop smiths I know.
2. A dove tail is an intricate combination of protrusions and indents that are used to connect multiple pieces of wood. Hacks like me hate them. They are tedious, time consuming and even assuming one has the patience to master their fabrication the stratospheric failure rate is frustratingly high. But, Kevin enjoys little more that to slip into his work shop late at night, while the rest of the world sleeps, to toil away on his jewelry boxes and chess boards. Admittedly, in the hands of an accomplished expert they are works of art. (But, you will never hear that from me!). Custom signs from Jeff Bird Recycled Art. Orders now being accepted.

Renee’s

On any weekend day (and if the weather is particularly nice or the workwork particularly frustrating) you can find Renee and John lounging poolside in their backyard. Cares seem to drift away with the application of sufficient sunblock, the enjoyment of glistening waters and perhaps even the indulgementof a cocktail.
A big block of plastic, featuring and eyeglass designer’s name, that in its first life was a display in an eyewear place was re-purposed to form the back bone of this piece. Cross-sectional support is added by other pieces harvested from that same source. The letters of oak are mounted on pine blocks cut from leftovers, harvested from the scrape bin. (I love those colors) “I must confess, I could use some rest, so I stumbled over to [Renee’s] backyard.” Custom signs from Jeff Bird Recycled Art. Orders now being accepted.

The Rusty Spur

T. Tom’s

Tom has the clearest, cleanest pool you ever dipped in. He never stops being the quintessential host. T.Tom’s the best joint in the hood. Neon Oak letters surrounded by salvaged aluminum lighting rod wire topped by pine scrap bin letters, all mounted on a composite table top. Ahh, the glistening water and a cold beer, the Life of Tom. Custom signs from Jeff Bird Recycled Art. Orders now being accepted

The Umbrella Academy

Tony’s Flying Service

Tony loves to fly. He works overtime to fund this exciting but expensive hobby. Perhaps, there is in the back of his mind, a place for him to pilot a light aircraft in the bush of one of this planet’s last frontiers. The basis of the Re(DE)Sign is salvaged rough sawn pine that was glued together and then cut into a circle. The big letters are crafted from pine scraps and the smaller from oak. The airplane is carved from a left over cedar 4” x 4” topped with a baseboard scrap for a wing. The propeller is from a model airplane that attracted my attention umpteen years ago at a local flea market which waited patiently in my shop for a new use. May the winds always be at your tail. The Dock

Space Bar

Even Keel Cafe

Long days of wandering on the Island of Nantucket Pam and Tom are fueled by a meals consumed in one of this Haven’s neatest joints. A piece of old shelf wood forms the basis of this Re(DE)sign. Mahogany letters harvested from a hand built, custom crafted wall unit fabricated from exotic hard wood, spell out a name and a life’s philosophy. The hand crafted sailboat hull supports hard plastic sails garnered from an old store display and is suspended over calm seas. Maintain an even keel, great lesson. Joey’s Bait Shop

This particular piece was created with a large piece of mahogany that was originally from a custom crafted wall unit. The fact that it was constructed from this exotic wood speaks volumes as to its position on the quality scale. The big arrow is a piece of quarter inch plywood from the back of an old cabinet. And, the fish, ahh the fish, is carved from five-quarter finger jointed primed trim board harvested from the dumpster out back. The washers and screw heads representing lights are from the numerous jars of hardware adorning the shelves on my workshop. And , the letters are cut from scrap oak harvested from the bottom of the scrap bin. Custom signs from Jeff Bird Recycled Art.
